Balance Training for Better Posture and Performance | Ageless Living

I Get Younger Every Year – And So Can You!

Let's face it: we've been sold a bill of goods that says aging is about decline. But what if I told you that's a lie? What if I said that the most vibrant, engaged people I know are those who refuse to accept that narrative? They're the ones who still find joy in play – and they're getting younger every year.

As an 85-year-old movement educator, I've seen it time and time again: when we make play a priority, our bodies and minds respond with vitality. And I'm not just talking about physical activity; I'm talking about engaging with life in all its messy, wonderful complexity. So, what's the secret to staying young at heart? It starts with balance training – and not just for the obvious reasons.

The Playground Doesn't Care How Old You Are

I still remember the first time I dove into a pool at 75. My grandkids were there, cheering me on, and I thought to myself, 'This is it. This is where I come alive.' From that moment on, I knew that play was key to staying young – not just physically, but mentally and spiritually as well. And let me tell you, my body's been responding ever since.

As we age, our balance and posture can become a real challenge. But research shows that balance training has the expected beneficial effect on balance performance in both healthy older adults and young adults (1). In fact, studies have confirmed that exercise improves balance in healthy older adults – particularly those living independently (2).

Challenge Both Sides of Your Brain – Every Single Day

Now, I know what you're thinking: 'Stephen, this all sounds great, but how do I get started?' The answer is simple: just keep moving. But don't just move your body; engage your mind as well. Play is a holistic experience that requires both physical and mental effort.

One of the most important things to remember is that balance training isn't just about standing on one foot or doing some fancy exercises. It's about challenging both sides of your brain – every single day. This means incorporating activities that promote cognitive function, such as puzzles, games, or even learning a new skill (3).

Practical Steps to a Younger You

So, what can you do TODAY on the playground? Here are a few practical steps to get you started:

1. **Start small**: Begin with simple balance exercises like standing on one foot at a time. Hold onto a counter or the wall if needed – and don't be afraid to fall (you'll get back up again).

2. **Find your flow**: Engage in activities that bring you joy, whether it's dancing, painting, or playing music. The more you enjoy yourself, the more likely you are to stick with it.

3. **Challenge yourself**: Incorporate physical and mental challenges into your daily routine, such as learning a new skill or taking on a puzzle.

Never Leave the Playground

The playground doesn't care how old you are – and neither should you. As I always say, "I get younger every year." And so can you. It's time to reject the narrative that aging is about decline and instead choose a life of play, vitality, and joy.

So, what are you waiting for? Join me on the playground today and start challenging both sides of your brain – every single day. Remember: **never leave the playground** (www.neverleavetheplayground.com).
