Welcome to the Playground

Hello there! I'm Stephen Jepson, and you've stumbled upon a special place where movement meets joy and independence. Today, we're going to talk about something that can be both daunting and exhilarating — balance exercises for seniors.

For over 50 years, I've been on this journey of daily playful movement, walking barefoot on balance boards, juggling while standing on one leg. It's not just a hobby; it's my lifeblood. And now, I want to share some insights that might change your relationship with aging and movement.

My Story: A Lifelong Quest for Balance

When I was 15 years old, I had a near-fatal accident that left me with a severe leg injury. The doctors told me I would never walk again, but my mother said something that changed everything: "Stephen, you're not going to give up on walking, are you?" That question ignited a fire inside of me. I refused to let that little voice in my head control my life.

Over the years, I've watched people in their 70s and 80s transform before my eyes with balance training. They gain more confidence, mobility, and independence. It's not about standing still; it's about moving with confidence. This is what I want to share with you today — a path back to the playground.

The Science or Wisdom Behind Balance Exercises

Your body doesn't know the difference between exercise and play — but your brain does. When you're having fun, your brain releases endorphins that make everything feel better. These exercises aren't just about physical health; they're about mental well-being too.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a common issue for people with Parkinson's disease. It can be terrifying and limiting, but it doesn't have to be. The 4 S strategy — STOP, SIGH, SHIFT, STEP — can help mitigate FOG episodes. When you feel an episode starting, try to STOP your movements, take a SIGH, and then SHIFTO your weight before STEPping. This simple technique can make all the difference.

Practical Steps: Exercises for Today

Now that we've covered some of the science let's dive into practical steps. You don't need any special equipment; just a few minutes each day will have you feeling more balanced and confident in no time.

1. **Single-Leg Stand**: Find a flat surface like your kitchen counter or a sturdy chair. Stand on one leg, lift the other slightly off the ground, and hold for 30 seconds. Switch legs every minute.

2. **Heel-to-Toe Walk**: This is great for improving balance while moving. Walk in a straight line, placing your heel directly in front of your toes with each step. Aim to walk as far as you can without losing your balance.

3. **Tai Chi Inspired Movements**: Tai Chi combines slow, deliberate movements that can help improve balance and flexibility. You can find beginner routines online or visit a local class if one is available.

4. **Barefoot Walking on Balance Boards**: My favorite way to train! Place a balance board (or any flat surface) in your living room or backyard. Walk barefoot back and forth, focusing on maintaining your balance.

These exercises are not only fun but also incredibly effective at improving balance. Give them a try today!

Moving Forward with Confidence

Balance isn't just about preventing falls; it's about reclaiming independence and joy. If you're 60 or older, or if you have a loved one who is, these exercises can make a world of difference. Remember, "The playground is the best gym you'll ever find." Don't let FOG stop you from enjoying your life to the fullest.
