A Beautiful Summer Day in Sioux City, Iowa
The Spark of Independence
It was a beautiful summer day in Sioux City, Iowa. I was 8 years old. I remember shouting at the top of my lungs, "Hey, Mom! There's nothing to do!" My mother looked me straight in the eye and said, "Son, your bed needs making, the lawn needs mowing, and the trash needs carrying out." From that moment on, I took responsibility for finding things to do. And guess what? I've never been bored since.
Self-Directed Play: A Lifelong Skill
It's a skill anyone can learn – self-directed play. I'm living proof! As an 85-year-old movement educator, professor, and potter, I still find ways to engage my mind and body every day. Challenge both sides of your brain – every single day. It keeps you young...and I get younger every year!
The Playground Doesn't Care How Old You Are
I'm living in a world where people often wait for someone else to tell them what to do, or until they're old enough to retire. No way! Never leave the playground. Sioux City may have been my playground 77 years ago, but it's not too late to find your own playground now.
Warmly,
Stephen
