Play Can Make Adults Feel Happier and Less Stressed - Research Shows
I Get Younger Every Year
You know what they say about aging: it's a natural process, and we should all just accept our declining powers with grace. Well, I'm here to tell you that's just a bunch of hooey. As an 85-year-old who still believes in the transformative power of play, I can attest that never leaving the playground is the key to staying young at heart – and mind.
I remember when my students would ask me why I still insisted on wearing my " Potter-in-Residence" t-shirt to class. My response? Because it reminds me to keep things fun! And trust me, after decades of teaching movement education at UCF, I've seen the impact that play has on both physical and cognitive well-being.
Let's talk about some recent research that confirms what we've all known intuitively: play makes us happier and less stressed. It turns out that the most effective playful environments for adults aren't your run-of-the-mill playgrounds with swings and slides (although, let me tell you, I still love those). No, no – it's the ones that sneak up on you, like a game of hide-and-seek in an unexpected alleyway or a spontaneous dance party in a park.
These "un-announced" playgrounds have been shown to have a profound impact on our mental health and cognitive function. Think about it: when was the last time you felt completely carefree? Like a weight had been lifted off your shoulders, and all that mattered was the present moment?
For me, it's still every day. I get younger every year – thanks in large part to my daily doses of play. My brain is sharper, my movements more fluid, and my stress levels down to almost zero. Okay, maybe not zero, but you get the idea.
The Science Behind Play
So what's happening in our brains when we engage in playful activities? Research suggests that playfulness stimulates a region called the prefrontal cortex (PFC), which is responsible for executive function – think planning, decision-making, and problem-solving. The more we challenge this area through play, the better equipped we are to navigate life's complexities.
But here's the fascinating part: play also has a profound impact on our default mode network (DMN). This is the "rest-and-digest" system that helps us relax, reflect, and recharge. When we engage in playful activities, our DMN kicks into high gear, reducing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. No wonder we feel happier!
Challenge Both Sides of Your Brain
Now that you know about the science behind play, it's time to get moving (literally!). Challenge both sides of your brain – every single day – with these simple, yet powerful, playground activities:
1. **Get lost in a city park**: Explore an unfamiliar neighborhood or park and see what treasures you can discover.
2. **Take up a new hobby**: Whether it's pottery (ahem), painting, or playing the drums, your brain will thank you for the challenge.
3. **Play hide-and-seek with friends**: Trust me, it's never too late to start a game of hide-and-seek – and you'll be amazed at how much fun it still is!
4. **Dance like nobody's watching**: I do this daily (much to the chagrin of my neighbors). Put on your favorite tunes and let loose!
The Playground Doesn't Care How Old You Are
Remember, the playground doesn't care how old you are – or what shape your body is in. What it cares about is that you show up with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a sense of playfulness.
So, don't wait any longer! Join me on the playground today (you can find all my favorite spots at neverleavetheplayground.com) and discover the transformative power of play for yourself. Your brain – and body – will thank you.
Just Keep Moving
As I always say: "Never leave the playground." And with that, I'll leave you with a final challenge:
Go out there and find your own playground today. Whether it's a park, a museum, or even your living room (yes, really!), just keep moving – and playing.
Stay young at heart,
