Playful Movement for Life - Never Leave the Playground | Stay Young & Healthy
I Get Younger Every Year
I'm living proof that you can stay playful and healthy at any age. Just last week, I was dodging hula hoops with a group of 7-year-olds at our community center's outdoor play day. They laughed as I stumbled over my own feet (well, maybe not "stumbled" – but it felt like it to me!). One little tyke asked, "Stephen, why are you moving so slow?" My response? "I'm not moving slow, kiddo – I'm just enjoying the ride!" The playground doesn't care how old you are; it's where the magic happens.
My Personal Playground Journey
As a professor of movement studies at UCF for over two decades, I've had the privilege of exploring play and its benefits with students from all walks of life. After retiring (if you can call it that), I discovered my true passion: pottery. Who knew that creating ceramics would be just as much about play as teaching? Now, as a movement educator and award-winning potter, I'm committed to spreading the joy of playful movement for life.
The Science of Playful Brains
It turns out I wasn't just having fun with those 7-year-olds – I was also giving my brain a boost. Research shows that playful brains are better equipped to handle cognitive demands as we age. By engaging in activities that challenge both sides of our brain (more on this later), we can preserve essential functions like balance, coordination, and confidence. This is crucial for maintaining independence and overall well-being in older adults.
But what exactly does "playful" mean? Is it just about having fun or being silly? Not quite. Playfulness involves a state of flow – an optimal mix of challenge and enjoyment that engages our motor skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. This is why activities like table tennis (the #1 game neuroscientists say can slow brain aging) are so effective: they integrate movement with higher-level thinking.
The Playground Doesn't Care...
When it comes to staying playful and healthy as we age, the playground – in all its forms – is where the magic happens. It's not about grand gestures or expensive equipment; just keep moving, and you'll be amazed at what your body can do. That hula hoop I dodged? Now that was a challenge for both sides of my brain! As I like to say: Challenge both sides of your brain – every single day.
Practical Steps to Never Leave the Playground
1. **Schedule playtime**: Treat playful movement as non-negotiable self-care. Set aside time each week to engage in activities that bring you joy and challenge.
2. **Find a playground buddy**: Share the fun with friends, family, or a community group. Social connections are just as essential for brain health as physical activity!
3. **Start small**: Begin with short sessions (10-15 minutes) and gradually increase duration as your body adapts.
4. **Mix it up**: Incorporate different activities – like dance, yoga, or even table tennis! – to keep your brain and body engaged.
5. **Celebrate mistakes**: Remember that the playground is all about experimentation and growth. Don't be afraid to try new things and learn from your "mistakes."
