Playful Movement for Life - Stay Young with Play
I Get Younger Every Year – And So Can You!
"I'm not old, I'm just... seasoned," I like to say with a wink. But let's be real, 85 is getting up there. Yet, as I leap over playground obstacles or spin my pottery wheel, I feel the energy and joy of a spring chicken. It's no coincidence – playful movement has been my secret sauce for staying vibrant at any age.
Growing up, our family would often take long hikes in the woods behind our house. My parents were hippies before hippiedom was cool, always encouraging us to explore, climb trees, and get our hands dirty. Those carefree afternoons on the forest floor taught me that movement wasn't just about getting from point A to B – it was an adventure.
Fast-forward to my days as a professor at UCF, where I introduced students to the joys of somatics and creative expression. But I soon realized that our adult brains often forget how to play. We get stuck in our heads, worried about productivity and efficiency, and neglect the very thing that keeps us young: movement.
That's when I coined my mantra: Never leave the playground. It's not just a catchy phrase – it's a reminder that the playground doesn't care how old you are. It's where we connect with our inner child, tap into our creativity, and rediscover the joys of playful movement.
The Science Says...
Researchers have been catching on to what I've known all along: playfulness is essential for well-being across the lifespan. Studies show that adults who engage in playful activities experience reduced stress levels, improved mood, and enhanced cognitive function (1). In fact, a recent study found that incorporating playful movement into daily routines can even slow down the progression of Parkinson's disease (2).
But what about the benefits for our brains? A 2026 National Geographic article highlighted the importance of pairing strength training with another form of exercise, such as dance or sports, to maximize results in regard to longevity (3). And let's not forget the connection between playful movement and brain health – research suggests that engaging in activities like play-fighting, obstacle courses, or even trampolining can stimulate neural growth and improve cognitive function.
Challenge Both Sides of Your Brain – Every Single Day
So, what does this mean for you? It means it's time to get creative, take risks, and challenge your adult brain with playful movement. Don't worry if you're not the next ninja warrior – we're not here to judge. Our goal is to help you rebuild balance, coordination, and confidence at any age.
Here are some practical steps to get you started on the playground:
1. **Get moving**: Find a local park or playground near you and spend 20-30 minutes engaging in playful activities like climbing, swinging, or balancing.
2. **Try something new**: Take a dance class, learn how to rock climb, or try your hand at pottery (like me!).
3. **Incorporate play into daily routines**: Replace one sedentary activity with a playful one – e.g., instead of watching TV, take a walk while listening to music.
4. **Make it social**: Invite friends or family members to join you on the playground for some friendly competition and camaraderie.
Just Keep Moving
The truth is, we're never too old to play. As I look back on my life's journey – from professor to potter, from hiker to playground enthusiast – I realize that playful movement has been the common thread. It's kept me young at heart, connected to my creativity, and vibrant in body and mind.
